A reading of the works of three major contributors to the sociology of music: Georg Lukacs, Ernst Bloch, & Theodor Adorno. All three investigated this field during a crisis in musical practice, one of whose major expressions was the movement away from tonality. Music has ceased to be an accompaniment to specific social occasions & has become autonomous. The failure of these three authors to clarify their own relationship to avant-garde practice in music is the major limitation of their sociology of music. W. H. Stoddard
